Swimming Guru, Running Monk – this is the motto of this year’s extraordinary charity challenge, whose aim is to raise awareness and support for the construction of a hospice and health center in Krisna Valley.
The central figure of the initiative is Sivarama Swami, the founder and spiritual leader of Krisna Valley, an internationally renowned spiritual teacher and author of numerous books. In recent years, he has attracted attention through outstanding athletic achievements undertaken in support of important community causes, emphasizing that even while following a non-violent, vegetarian diet, it is possible to achieve exceptional physical performance. Through his previous swimming challenges, Swami has supported, among other causes, the translation of foundational works of Vedic literature into Arabic.
This year’s challenge is his most ambitious undertaking yet. Sivarama Swami will swim 40 kilometers in Lake Balaton, from Keszthely to Fonyód. In practice, this means spending almost the entire day in the water, from the early hours of the morning until late in the evening. He has been preparing for the challenge for months with daily training, following a structured training program under medical and professional athletic supervision.
The baton will then be passed to his personal Secretary, Syama, who will complete a 180-kilometer run as part of the 220-kilometer circuit around Lake Balaton. Syama has been running regularly on a daily basis for six years, but the ultramarathon distance will be a significant challenge even for him.
The aim of the initiative is to support the construction of a hospice and health center in Krisna Valley. In addition to serving the monks and community members living there, the facility will also offer services to visitors and members of the wider public in the future. According to the plans, modern healthcare will be complemented by traditional and alternative approaches such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, and other holistic methods. The organizers aim to complete the construction within one year.
The organizers hope that this extraordinary sporting challenge will not only draw attention to the project, but also inspire as many people as possible to support the realization of this important initiative.
